School is a breeding ground for shaping up the younger generation to become the future pillars of the society. To this end, schools have an important role to play by instilling the environmental protection concept to the students from their childhood years and by implementing on campus various means of environmental programmes for the students to take part in such that they can earnestly practise what is being advocated.

Hong Kong produces an overwhelming amount of food waste which ends up in the landfills on a daily basis. In 2009, the government announced that in order to reduce food scraps and solid waste, the Environmental Bureau would join hands with the Education Bureau to invite all schools to sign a Green Lunch Charter. Upon becoming a party to the Charter, schools should endeavor to adopt on-site meal portioning approach and use only reusable food containers and cutlery.

As an environmental education and project-based learning platform, the Visitor Centre in EcoPark aims to increase visitors' awareness on waste reduction and understanding of municipal solid waste management. Its interesting and engaging exhibits include a life-size model landfill, virtual three-dimensional multimedia exhibit, video and interactive games that help visitors to rethink about 3Rs - "reduce", "reuse" and "recycle". Visitors can also learn about waste management and disposal in Hong Kong as well as how to reduce waste. Through discussion and exchanging views with teachers and docents, students can even enhance their waste reduction awareness and practise green living at school.
