Ground-Breaking Ceremony of WEEE Treatment and Recycling Facility

In an attempt to tie in with the implementation of producer responsibility scheme (PRS) on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), the construction of government-funded WEEE Treatment and Recycling Facility (WEEETRF), which is located in EcoPark, commenced in January 2016. The WEEETRF, which is expected to be commissioned in mid-2017, will have a handling capacity 30,000 tonnes of WEEE per year and will provide collection and proper treatment services for eight types of regulated e-wastes. The ground-breaking ceremony was successfully held on 21 January 2016 and was jointly officiated by the Secretary for the Environment, Mr. Wong Kam-sing, the Chief Executive Officer of Germany's ALBA Group, Dr. Axel Schweitzer and the Chairman of Integrated Waste Solutions Group Holdings Ltd, Mr. Brian Cheng.

The PRS will cover eight types of regulated e-wastes including air-conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, television sets, computers, printers, scanners and monitors. Manufacturers and importers of regulated electrical equipment will be required to register as registered suppliers and pay a recycling fee for regulated electrical equipment distributed in Hong Kong, and provide free removal services for consumers.

Green Information

Clean shorelines and the refuse on beaches has arose public attention in recent years. In order to keep abreast of the times and successfully implement strategies for keeping the shorelines clean, the Government set up an inter-departmental working group to review and formulate measures to improve the cleanliness of our shorelines. The working group launched the Shorelines Cleanup Day Campaign since April 2015 so as to promote to the public about the environmental benefits of keeping our shorelines clean. The Cleanup Event will be continuously organized in 2016-2017 and interested public can visit here to contact the co-organizers to participate the Events.
