Tidbits of EcoPark
Paid a visit to eco-block plant

The Community Relations Unit of EcoPark paid a visit to a local eco-block factory to learn more about the manufacturing process of eco-blocks and its plant operation. The first step of turning waste glass bottles into eco-paving blocks is to crush the collected waste glass bottles into glass sands of specific size, and then mix with construction and demolition waste and other raw materials. The mixture is then injected into a mold under high pressure to form eco-blocks.

Eco-blocks are widely used in paving footpaths and ground of parks. Some of the footpaths of EcoPark are also paved with eco-blocks.

Waste Wood Recycling Campaign Certificate Presentation Ceremony 2014

Organized by Hong Kong Environmental Protection Association (HKEPA) and supported by the Environmental Protection Department, EcoPark and its tenant -- Hong Kong Hung Wai Wooden Board Company, the Christmas Tree and Peach Blossom Tree Recycling Campaigns 2013/14 have come to a satisfactory close. This year, the amount of waste wood collected remarkably surpassed last year's result, showing that the general public and organizations are paying more attention to the imminent waste problem and are willing to undertake their responsibility by joining the waste wood recycling procession.

To honor participating organizations for their contributions in the waste wood recycling campaigns, HKEPA held the "Waste Wood Recycling Campaign Certificate Presentation Ceremony 2014" at the University of Hong Kong recently, with some 90 participating organizations being granted the certificates.

Award presenters who attended the ceremony include: Mr. Chen Che Kong, Principal Environmental Protection Officer of the Environmental Protection Department, Prof. C.Y. Jim, Chair Professor of Geography, Department of Geography of the University of Hong Kong, Dr. Hon. Kenneth Chan, Dr. Hon. Helena Wong, Ms. Noel Au, Project Manager of EcoPark, and Mr. William Wong, Assistant General Manager of Hong Kong Hung Wai Wooden Board Company.

Mr. Ricky Fan, Chairman of HKEPA presented souvenirs to all award presenters.

Green Issues
5 June 2014: World Environment Day 2014

The United Nations (UN) has designated 5 June as the World Environment Day (WED) since 1972, with a view to raising public awareness of environmental protection. The WED 2014, with "Raise your voice, not the sea level" as the motto, concerns about the challenges faced by Small Islands Development States. It aims to encourage the public to put concerted efforts in minimizing greenhouse gas emission by reducing food waste and waste plastics, waste recycling, energy saving and practicing green living, thus alleviating the risk of global warming and the rise in sea level.

Interested parties please visit the United Nations Environment Programme website to register your WED activity and make your green pledge.
