Call for territory-wide participation in Peach Blossom Tree Recycling Campaign

To encourage the public to reduce waste and treasure resources, the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Association, HKEPA (Chinese version only) has joined hands with the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) and the EcoPark, to re-launch the Peach Blossom Tree Recycling Campaign. The collected peach blossom trees will be delivered to the waste wood recycler in EcoPark, Hong Kong Hung Wai Wooden Board Company, for recycling into wood fuel pellets (a useful type of renewable energy), which helps transform waste into energy, as well as reduce the burden on landfills.

To induce territory-wide participation, the Campaign has further expanded to a network of collection points in all districts in the territory to cover individuals and households. From 8 to 9 February 2014 and 15 to 16 February, viz. the two weekends after the Lunar New Year holidays, individuals who want to partake in this Campaign can deliver the peach blossom trees they want to dispose of at the refuse transfer stations (RTSs) of the EPD or refuse collection points (RCPs) designated by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) in each district. Besides, organizations are reminded that the RTSs and RCPs designated for the Campaign will only accept the peach blossom trees from individuals. Organizations cannot abandon the peach blossom trees at these collection points, but should deliver them directly to the EcoPark.

For the exact locations and opening hours of the designated RTSs and RCPs, please refer to the websites of EcoPark and HKEPA

Turning waste plastic bottles into storage box

Waste plastic bottles can be upcycled into a storage box through simple cutting and trimming, thereby achieving the mentality of use less, waste less.

Materials needed: 2 rinsed plastic milk bottles
Tools: permanent marker pen, cutter, scissors

Step 1:
As shown in the photo, use a cutter and a pair of scissors to cut one of the bottles at about 1/3 height from its base (along the red dotted line as shown on the left bottle); similarly, cut at the middle of another bottle (along the red dotted line as shown on the right bottle).

Step 2:
Assemble the 2 cut-off bottle bottoms into a storage box.

Step 3:
A unique storage box can be made easily by drawing your desired pattern on its surface with a permanent marker pen.
