Tidbits of EcoPark
Visit to the EMSD new headquarters building

The Community Relations Unit of EcoPark visited the Education Path at the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) headquarters building and shared the mutual insights on various green features with their staff.

The EMSD new headquarters building was reconstructed from the former cargo terminal building in Kowloon Bay in 2005. The new headquarters building has retained most of the concrete and steel structures of the old building, which helped to minimize the generation of construction wastes and the consumption of energy during the constructions. Besides, the new headquarters building is equipped with several green features, including the solar photovoltaic system for utilizing renewable energy, the sun pipes for reflecting the daylight and the grey water recycling system for flushing purposes, etc.

Recycle Toys to Extend the Toy Story

With kids growing up, outgrown toys cluttered up the room, filling up much of the space. If you do not want those toys to go in the garbage, donating them to "Cherish Our Precious Toys" Toys Collection Campaign organized by Baby Kingdom (BK) Environmental Protection Education Fund can be an option. Children can simply deliver their outgrown toys to the collection points at BK Stores in Kwun Tong and Tsim Sha Tsui. By taking part in the process of donating, children can learn the art of give and take, and learn to share with others. At the same time, they can put the idea of reuse and recycling into practice, extending the lifespan of the toys.

Toys Collection Campaign is the prelude to the "Cherish Our Precious Toys" Charity Event. Collected toys will be supplied to the "Recycled Toys Station" after checking and cleaning. Participating kids can make a donation to support their environmental education projects and come to the Station to choose a "Recycled Toys" after making a pledge to cherish toys. A "Feeling about Recycled Toys" Competition and "Toys Exhibition" will also take place on the same day.

The collection period runs from now on till 24 May 2013. Donate toys and let them play their new role. For details, please visit the event website.

Lessons to Green
Turn trash into treasure!

It takes a long time for a waste plastic bottle to decompose. Have you ever thought of giving a new life to plastic bottle at once by making use of your creativity?

Turn a waste plastic bottle into two useful tools:

1. Rinse the plastic bottle with clean water;

2. Use a cutter to divide the bottle into one fifth;

3. Use a tape to cover the edge to prevent any injuries caused.
Caution: Beware of the sharp edge, children should be accompanied by adults when doing the activity.

The bottle cap can be used to seal plastic bag for storing materials such as fish feed and snack.

The lower part of the bottle can be used as chopstick or pen holder. You may personalize the holder with waste paper or other waste materials, to create a unique holder of your own.

22 March 2013: World Water Day "5-minute Shower Challenge"

Green Power Website

To arouse public awareness of freshwater and the conservation on freshwater resources, the United Nations designated 22 March as the World Water Day in 1992. In Hong Kong, due to a low understanding on water resources, together with a stable supply of freshwater and competitive water tariff, the amount of water consumption has been on the rise, with the average daily water use in Hong Kong per capita 30% more than the global average.

According to the water saving tips provided from the Water Supplies Department, example saving from a four-member household can save about 96 litres of daily water if each member cut his or her showering time by 2 minutes. In view of this, the environmental organization Green Power organizes the "5-minute Shower Challenge", which is an annual large-scale water-saving and low-carbon campaign that invites all Hong Kong people to practice 5-minute shower and achieve it as their final goal. Since the launching of "5-minute Shower Challenge" campaign in October 2011, more than 230 schools, 16,000 primary and secondary school students as well as 5,700 citizens have supported and participated in it.

Start Water Conservation from Home! Visit the campaign website now to make a pledge of taking a shower for less than 5 minutes a day to cut carbon emissions. Participants can redeem the limited edition of "5-minute Sandglass" as gift. Gifts are limited and available while stock lasts.
