Making Full Use of Woods - Plum Trees Collection Campaign

Right after Santa Claus left the town, the Chinese New Year is coming to town! To celebrate the joy of Chinese New Year, families and friends gather together to flock the flower markets, do shopping and decorate homes. However, the annual joyful time brings costly impacts to the environment. Besides food leftovers from reunion dinners, over-packaging on gifts, used red pockets and red couplets, the luck-bringing plants that families purchase in flower markets would also be sent to landfills.

In view of this, one of the EcoPark tenants - Hong Kong Hung Wai Wooden Board Company and the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Association (HKEPA) will re-launch the waste wood collection service, following the success of the Christmas Tree Collection Campaign, for collecting luck-bringing plants such as plum trees, in hopes to encourage the public to minimize the drain on the limited resources of our planet and collect recyclable materials while celebrating the festive season.

The plum trees and other waste wood will be collected by HKEPA, and then handed to Hong Kong Hung Wai Wooden Board Company for further processing. They will be recycled into wood coal, which is a cleaner fuel than conventional coal, and its residual ashes can also be used for composting.

New Opportunity Limited – Tuen Mun and Yuen Long Recycle Centre

When it comes to the promotion of source separation of waste, the role of community organizations in encouraging active community participation is indispensable. New Opportunity Limited – Tuen Mun and Yuen Long Recycle Centre, a community cooperation unit of the EcoPark tenant - Yan Oi Tong EcoPark Plastic Resources Recycling Centre, is featured in the Guide of Tenants of this issue.

New Opportunity Limited is a social enterprise founded by a group of paramedics, social workers, professionals and grassroots people. It advocates public health and environmental conservation. Its Tuen Mun and Yuen Long Recycle Centre (hereinafter known as "the Centre") has been in operation since October 2011. Apart from receiving waste plastics from the community, the Centre collects plastics from neighboring shops, schools and organizations. The Centre also visits target buildings in Tuen Mun and Yuen Long to promote the Programme on Source Separation of Domestic Waste. All collected plastics have to undergo preliminary sorting, rinsing and compression before they are sent to Yan Oi Tong EcoPark Plastic Resources Recycling Centre for further recycling.

Lessons to Green
Eco-Garment

Do you know what color of garment is most polluting to the environment and bring most harm to the human body?

Recently, a study by Greenpeace revealed that the suppliers of several big European fashion brands are polluting China's two main rivers with hazardous chemicals. Even these fashion brands have set strict requirements and restrictions on hazardous substances in their processes of garment dyeing and manufacturing, the problem of wastewater discharge has been overlooked. To be a responsible consumer, we have to take action by shopping eco-fashion, not only from an ethical point of view to save our natural resources, but also for healthier skin as the eco-clothing is allergy-free.

Last but not least, the answer to the question at the beginning is "black", as it requires the mixing of the maximum number of dyes. Unfortunately, black remains the most popular color in clothes.
