Nestled in the frontyard of Times Square, "Junk Wood Animal Farm" showcased the wood sculptures of a Local artist Mr Wong Ting Yan. The uniqueness of the exhibition lay in the raw materials of the sculptures – waste wooden boards. Mr Wong Ting Yan, with his magical hands and daring sense of humour, transformed the waste wooden boards into quaint creatures.

These sculptures can be more than just art, as Mr Wong Tin Yan is also able to turn waste wood into furniture that are absorbing, functional and eco-friendly, with his magical hands. Recently, his furniture was displayed at the Green Living Zone of Hong Kong Houseware Fair held at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

In addition wooden animal sculptures and furniture, waste wood can also be transformed into bio-fuel, and this process will be accomplished by one of our EcoPark tenants shortly. No matter what the final products are, they all have the same purpose – encouraging the public to make the best use of our valuable resources.

"Community Recycling Network exhibition and drama show" @ Times Square, Causeway Bay

Tying the eco-tides generated by "Junk Wood Animal Farm", EPD held the "Community Recycling Network exhibition and drama show" recently that serves to introduce the different components of Community Recycling Network and the flow of local recycling processes to the public. The exhibition also displayed products made of waste plastics, waste glass and waste electronic gadgets, allowing the public to understand that waste materials other than waste wood also have their market value. Waste reduction at source is not only effective in relieving the pressure of landfills, it also helps to recover our valuable resources.

Besides, the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre played a tailor-made drama for the exhibition. The lively drama depicted a story about an environmental warrior who saved our polluted earth, hoping that the public can rethink about the pollution problems and drive home the green message.

"Asiatic Black Bears & Polar Bears: Their Ideal Habitat" Art Exhibition@Hopewell Centre, Wan Chai

Inspired by the local artist, Ms Kiwi Liu, 100 students utilized recycled scrap papers, egg trays and shells collected from eateries to create a habitat for the Asiatic black bears and polar bears recently.

Each bear could only stand on a small island, a vivid presentation of their difficulties and an implication that what we saw is just "the tip of the iceberg". The public must confront the problems of global warming and habitat destruction and take action to help making the environment restorative.

Getting to KNOW
Eco drainage cover

Walking along the road paved with reclaimed asphalt, you will arrive at the Marine Frontage Management Office inside EcoPark where another unpretentious green feature – Eco drainage cover, can be found.

Eco drainage cover makes use of recycled fiberglass as its major constituent, and can be shredded when aged to become a new batch of drainage covers. The drainage cover is not inferior to its counterparts made from new materials, and it complies with the GS requirements applicable to cast-iron drainage cover.

United Nations Environment Programme
Commemorated on 5 June, World Environment Day (WED) aims at motivating active public engagement for realization of green living worldwide.

With WED’s whistle blowing, the Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC) launched a "WED 2012 - Green Home Action" campaign. The campaign encourages housing estates and schools to voluntarily organize activities with the theme of environmental protection, bringing green issues into daily lives, helping the public to nurture the green habits.

Besides, ECC will set up booths in shopping malls during the period from late May to early July, with students ambassadors introducing "3R" (reduce, reuse and recycle) and sharing green living tips to the public.

For details, please refer to the website of ECC.
