The public has been setting a higher standard for the definition of ‘a good corporation'. Many companies have already set green measures on their business operation and have been conducting regular self-monitoring.

By establishing the partnership with tenants in EcoPark and participating in "Friends of EcoPark" Scheme, corporations will be granted certificates as acknowledgement for their contribution in donating recyclable wastes to the recycling traders in EcoPark. Their corporate images of going green will be further enchanced.

"Friends of EcoPark 2010/11" Networking and Sharing Session

On 18th November 2011, a Networking and Sharing Session for "Friends of EcoPark 2010/11" scheme was held to enhance the bonding and mutual understanding between EcoPark's tenants and their partner companies. Let's share and review some of the highlights on this memorable event!

The event was jointly organized by both Environmental Protection Department (EPD) and Management Company of EcoPark. Dr. Lawrence Wong, Principal Environmental Protection Officer of EPD delivered a welcome remark to unveil the event. Dr. Wong pointed out without the aid of waste supply and close support from the participating organizations of "Friends of EcoPark", the success of EcoPark could not have been possible. Among the group of attending Environmental Protection Officers of EPD, Mr. Alan Yu gave an introduction on the situation of commercial and industrial waste recycling in Hong Kong, and pointed out that there is still a large room for improvement in waste reduction.

As one of the major events of "Friends of EcoPark" scheme, EcoPark's tenants and partner companies were invited to share their successful partnerships arrangement. Representatives from Li Tong Group and St. James' Settlement WEEE Go Green EcoPark WEEE Recycling Centre gave a brief introduction on the development of their green businesses and the benefits received from the scheme. Representatives of Riso Hong Kong Limited and Canon Hong Kong Company Limited, the participating companies of "Friends of EcoPark 2010/11", also shared their successful collaboration with EcoPark's tenants and their companies' sustainable green system.

Guests took a tour to the Visitor Centre of EcoPark and the WEEE recycling factory of Li Tong Group following the sharing session. The tour helped enhancing the understanding of all our attended guests on the waste problem and the municipal solid l waste management in Hong Kong, as well as the recycling process of WEEE.

With the growing public concern towards food waste problem, Unilever Food Solutions, a division of one of our "Friends of EcoPark", Unilever Hong Kong Limited, partners with Tsui Wah Restaurant to launch a Food Waste Reduction Campaign in late November, 2011. The campaign is the territory's first self-initiated collaboration between two leading brands in food industry. It comprises of establishing a series of monitoring and indication measures in optimizing the operational efficiency on various levels through centralized purchasing management, logistic value chain, customer services and education.

An effective management of food waste is win-win situation for all. The food industry can impress customers by showing corporate social responsibility and increase the bottom line as a result of streamlined production, while the public can enjoy a fresher and healthier meal that keeps them coming back for more, and this in turn generates significant returns to the businesses. Most importantly, it is a much more environmentally appropriate way than landfill disposal, and the benefit to the environment goes far beyond money.

Getting to KNOW
Green Carpark

Walking around EcoPark you will find the extensive green space surrounding you. The car park lots outside the Administration Building are no exception. With the grass growing, the parking lots blend well with the extensive landscaping within EcoPark.

The parking lots are paved with a permeable cellular pavement which allows water penetration, and therefore vegetation can grow on the pavement.

The green pavement not simply increases the aesthetic appeal of the parking lots, it offers substantial functional value. It acts as a defense for heat, reducing the glare from sunlight, thus helps keep the environment cool.

The items available for exchange range from the very delicate accessories to bulky furniture, therefore it is not difficult to find the right choice for exchange. You can also give away the item for free so that it can be reused again by the recipient. With the habit of reuse, we can build up the spirit of treasuring resources and reducing waste, which is a key to securing sustainable livelihoods and environmental protection.

Stepping into the New Year, it is time for us to make a resolution to build a good habit of reduce and reuse. Look around your closet, can you find any unwanted stuff stocked? Why not help the items find a new home by donating the stuff to NGOs or by simply sitting in front of your computer to re-gift the item?
