A GREEN TALE OF THREE CITIES

As its topic of Sustainable Development Project 2010–11 is ‘Eco-City', H.K.U. Engineering Alumni Association (HKUEAA) arranged a visit to the EcoPark on 5 Mar for its engineering students and alumni to appreciate various environmentally-friendly concepts in Visitor Centre, tenants - Yan Oi Tong EcoPark Plastic Resources Recycling Centre and Champway Technology Ltd. In May, some of them went to Korea to visit some of the waste management facilities there.

Simon Tam, Sustainable Development Convenor of HKUEAA said, "The visit was indeed inspiring. If we had not seen all the waste recycling facilities in EcoPark, we would never know the seemingly useless waste that Hong Kong people produce massively everyday, such as plastic bottles, plastic bags, rancid oils, can be converted into useful items with monetary value. Although land in Hong Kong is scarce, it does not mean that the recycling industry cannot be well-developed. It depends on whether the government endeavours to promote the industry that creates local economic values.

"Our study tour to Korea in May let us learn an international-leading example on waste recycling. We visited the SUDOKWON landfill site in Incheon and the World Cup Park in Seoul which was built on a former abandoned landfill. Both public facilities have a leisure park which was built on ‘dump hills'. The operational electricity was generated by the waste collected from Seoul and Incheon. Actually they are also facing the same problem of searching land to extending their landfills as in Hong Kong. However, by innovative waste treatment method, they have successfully turned the landfill site into a popular, world-class tourist spot."

Coincidently, the motto of SUDOKWON Landfill Site Management Corporation (SLC) – ‘Waste, but Energy'! echoes "Waste from Energy", a proposition getting more attention in Hong Kong community. After the visits, the participants believe that Hong Kong can also treat waste to create infinite values to our society.

Getting to KNOW
Solar Hot Water System

In previous issues of newsletter, various green features of EcoPark were introduced. Let us introduce the solar hot water system in this issue.

Solar hot water systems harness the heat in solar radiation to produce hot water. Domestic solar hot water system usually comprises of solar collectors and a water tank. The solar collectors absorb the heat in solar radiation to heat up water, either directly or indirectly. The hot water so produced is stored in the storage tank for subsequent use. An alternative arrangement is to use a packaged type solar water heater, with solar collectors and an insulated storage tank packaged together in one integrated unit.

Usually a solar hot water system is designed to fulfill a major part of the hot water requirements of the premise, with the rest being made up by electric heating (or gas heating).
