Raising my Environmental Protection Awareness after Visiting EcoPark -
By Yu Chun, a Secondary Five Student of TIACC Woo Han Fai Secondary School

During the period from March to April 2011, all Secondary Five students of TIACC Woo Han Fai Secondary School visited EcoPark in Tuen Mun in different batches. These visits helped raise our environmental protection awareness and strengthened our knowledge on sustainable development.

During the visit, stimulating discussions were held. One of the discussion topics put to us was, with nearly 500 million tons of waste being disposed of at the landfills of Hong Kong in 2009, equivalent to nearly 1 ton of waste contributed by each Hong Kong citizen, it is expected that the landfills are going to be saturated in a number of years from now. As a Hong Kong citizen, how can you address this issue in a serious manner? How should waste be processed in the future? How can we actively reduce the amount of waste?

Visitor Centre
In the Visitor Centre, we learnt the ways on how the waste in Hong Kong is being processed from multi-media means such as video, virtual three-dimensional multimedia exhibit and life-size model of landfill. Through the discussion led by experienced docents, we had the opportunity to reconsider the impact of our living attitude on the environment and realize that we can change our daily living habits for the benefits of the environment, including reducing wastage of food, reducing usage of disposable dining utensils and avoiding the use of wrapping paper, etc.

Recycling Plant of Waste Cooking Oil
The entire world is facing the challenges of air pollution and energy shortage. We visited the recycling plant of waste cooking oil at EcoPark. Waste cooking oil is collected and refined into biodiesel. The biodiesel not only performs "less pollutants-emission", but also enhances the life span of automobiles. Even waste cooking oil has its own value!

Yan Oi Tong EcoPark Plastic Resources Recycling Centre
The docent of YOT EcoPark Plastic Resources Recycling Centre explained that different types of plastic require different recycling processes. Hong Kong citizens are generally weak in recycling awareness. An insufficient amount of waste plastic collected is the common challenge faced by the recycling industry.

A New Initiative from Form 5B Student on Environmental Protection
After visiting the EcoPark, Yu Hongxin of Form 5B suggested to place a small recycling bin to collect waste plastic in the classroom in order to raise the awareness of environmental protection within the class. The suggestion was fully supported by the class. Yu Hongxin expressed: "The recycling facilities are not universal and the public awareness of recycling is weak in Hong Kong. By setting up the recycling bin, I hope that more classmates would actively take part in the recycling activities so as to help build a better future for the environment."

Computer Recycling Programme (CRP)   Li Tong Group recently took part in the Computer Recycling Programme (CRP) fully funded by the industry and supported by EPD and Green Groups for three consecutive years. Being a professional waste recycler of this programme, we witnessed that public awareness of environmental protection has gradually been raised through the CRP.

There is a distinct value if a dumped computer is collected and managed appropriately. Li Tong Group collected the dumped computer through the CRP and then the dumped computer is dismantled into a few components in which some are returned to the 2nd hand market for reuse and some are recycled into raw materials such as iron, copper, plastics etc. The life cycle of those raw materials is further extended as they are returned into the markets for further productions.

The CRP not only minimizes the environmental impact but also reduces wastage of resources. "Action now! Join and support the Computer Recycling Programme together!"

Shiu Wing Steel Limited

Shiu Wing Steel Limited (Shiu Wing) was established as a ship-breaking operation in 1950. It entered into operating rolling mill business since 1958. Shiu Wing mainly recycles the scrap metal and returns it into the consumption loop at EcoPark. Do you know what the sources of those scrap metals are? Scrap metal actually consists of a wide range of steel products ranging from furniture, machinery and equipment to reinforced steel bars salvaged from demolished old buildings.

Getting to KNOW
Paving Blocks

When you enter into EcoPark, you will immediately get a feel of one of our green features. Do you know what this is? It is our paving blocks.

You may ask why the paving block is a green feature. In EcoPark, it is! The paving block is made of natural minerals, sands mixed with 15% to 50% of powder glass and cement mixed with 25% of coal ash. As glass is the main component of the paving blocks, the paving blocks give out an attractive outlook with shining surface and so it is especially suitable for road laying. Moreover, this presents new outlet for tens of thousand tons of waste glass created daily.
